More Painless Piercings Pop Up on the Catwalk

Rainbow Gatherings; Burning Man; and a 150-foot handwoven, mosslike carpet were all noted as inspirations backstage at Dries Van Noten. “She’s eco, but at the same time she’s high tech,” explained makeup artist Peter Philips of the designer’s free-spirited woman for Spring ’15. In other words, she’d wear fur-adorned flatforms to a festival and wouldn’t forget her iPhone (or Mophie charger) while getting in touch with nature.

The pro kept the face bare save for one “little element” that made a big impact: a single stripe of gold down the center of models’ bottom lips. “It’s somewhere between ethnic Maori makeup and a piercing,” he explained. MAC Mixing Medium (a clear alcohol base) was blended with gold powder from Ben Nye before it was painted onto lips with a pointy brush. Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in Diamond Gold was layered over top for a hint of sparkle. “If you don’t look at it, you won’t see it,” said Philips of the flash of metallic. “But at the end of the show [thanks to the domino-like finale in which all of the models staged a sit-in on the grassy catwalk], all the people will come close by and see my very subtle participation!” It was a maquillage move that was less in-your-face than the brow rings seen on the runway at Rodarte a few weeks back, but just as effective for channeling your inner rebel.
