These Braids Are Definitely Not Made for Schoolgirls

Make no mistake: These are not the innocent pigtail plaits of childhood romps around the playground or Dorothy skipping along the yellow brick road. Braids are back, but with a bad-girl twist. At the Elle Style Awards in London, catwalker Isabeli Fontana sported a pair of inverted French braids and a vibrant violet pout, while fellow model/DJ Mary Charteris upped the ante with a third plait on the crown of her head. In the social media realm, Brit beauty Suki Waterhouse posted a pic of younger sister Maddi’s twin plaits adorned with punky silver rings to Instagram. And on the runway in New York, hairstylist Duffy crafted a cool version for Custo Barcelona, while James Pecis (renowned for his knots) created a plaited mohawk for Zero + Maria Cornejo and a whole head of braids at Martin Keehn. The goth girls at Giles even made a single braid look special in London by capping the end with a velvet bow in off-kilter colors like brown and eggplant. Pair your plait with a killer lip (preferably in black if you’re bold enough), and you’re guaranteed to be the baddest chick around—no contest.
