The Statement Lip Makes a Triumphant Return for Spring 2015

In terms of the number of statement lips seen on the runway, Fall 2014 was lackluster at best (not counting Rihanna, who sat front-row wearing a different shade for each designer). Spring 2015, however, has made for multiple bright spots—and we haven’t even gotten to Milan yet. From NYFW parties (attended by the likes of Brooke Candy, Karolina Kurkova, Ashley Smith, Gigi Hadid, and Chloë Sevigny) to the runways in Manhattan ( Carolina HerreraEudon Choi, and Clover Canyon) and London ( Antonio BerardiTopshop Unique, and Burberry Prorsum), the pout is perfectly on point. Makeup artist Nick Barose, responsible for Hailee Steinfeld’s loud mouth at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, offered up a few tips for nailing the look:

Pick the right pink (or red or orange or magenta): If you’re hesitant, Barose suggests starting with fuchsia rather than classic red: “It’s easier to wear because the blue undertone flatters a lot of complexions.” Reach for deep, highly pigmented hues (like Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Lipstick in Dominant, the shade Barose used on Steinfeld) in lieu of less sophisticated neons.

Apply directly from the tube: “You’ll get more drama that way,” Barose advised. Plus, it helps deposit the color right on the lips instead of having to apply multiple layers with a brush. “To prevent smudging, don’t go too far into the corners,” he added.

Erase any mistakes: “Clean around the edges with a lip brush to create the perfect shape,” he said. “Or take small, pointy cotton swab and dab along the edges to blur the color out slightly.” Avoid any accidental feathering by tracing the edges with a clear liner prior to putting on lipstick.
