My Quest for Clear Skin: Microdermabrasion

Seeing no major results from my monthly facials, I decided to kick my skincare regimen up a notch and sample a more intense treatment. I originally scheduled an appointment with Biolite for a dermapen treatment, but my therapist told me that my pores were too clogged for that particular procedure. She recommended microdermabrasion, which is a non-chemical, non-invasive cosmetic treatment that uses micro-crystals to remove a superficial layer of the skin to extract my impurities and decrease the congestion.

Microdermabrasion is effective for dull skin, enlarged pores, mild acne scars, and congested skin; I considered myself to be an ideal candidate. This treatment is also often performed to diminish the appearance of shallow acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines.

The overall process took an hour. First, my therapist gave me a deep cleansing, followed by an extraction of my comedones before she continued with the microdermabrasion. As promised, it was a non-painful procedure; she used crystal flakes and a suctioning machine to exfoliate the dead skin cells on the outermost layer of my epidermis. Once that was done, my dermatologist applied a seaweed facemask to brighten my skin and finished the treatment with a serum. I left the clinic with a red face and a fleeting sense of hopelessness.

The dermatologist suggested that I avoid makeup and the sun for a few hours until the redness subsided. After two weeks, I still didn’t notice any major results from the microdermabrasion. If anything, I have experienced more breakouts since the procedure.

Join me next week as I continue my journey to clear skin .
