Like the Lucite bangles that have made their way into nearly every magazine and onto the arms of editors and celebrities, the makeup brushes Alexis Bittar crafted for Sephora are scene-stealers. Inspired by the “idea of sculptural fluidity” and “trapped water,” the accessories designer said he knew “nothing” about the beauty category, which made for a fresh perspective…and weighty tools. His first round of brushes were “super-heavy,” since they were devised entirely out of metal, but the final products feel substantial (similar to his bold bijoux) without packing pounds onto your makeup bag. Bittar’s Liquid Gold brush set, in my opinion, is the real showstopper in the range—boasting a geometric, onyx-like stand that displays the tools on your vanity similar to how a jeweler would parade his priciest piece in the store window. And the 24-karat gold brushes encrusted with Swarovski crystals don’t just sit pretty; a combo of natural and synthetic bristles feel as luxurious as they look. They even earned the master’s stamp of approval: “I tested them on my face while watching TV,” quipped Bittar.
