It’s been said that life imitates art, but for Alberta Ferretti, it was an instance of hair imitating architecture. Settled into her new Paris showroom, the designer presented her Limited Edition Spring 2016 evening collection, which took inspiration from the building’s friezes and gilt work. The opulence of the 18th-century townhouse once owned by the Rothschild family manifested itself into gunmetal foulards woven delicately through braided crowns—resulting in plaits worthy of a Renaissance portrait.
“The inspiration was a little ’70s, a little bohemian,” says Laurent Philippon, global artistic director for Bumble and Bumble, who devised the look. The hair pro began by misting the brand’s Thickening Hairspray onto the roots and blow-drying, using his fingers to boost volume. Then, with a curling iron, Philippon crafted natural waves before reaching for Dryspun Finish to enhance the tousled texture. The length was gathered into a loose, low ponytail and bits of hair were left out to frame the face and neck.
Next came the game-changing accessory: “I attached a scarf around the ponytail and then divided the [tail] into two sections—twisting the scarf around each piece,” he explained. “To create the crown, I pulled each section from the nape of the neck up around the hairline, securing with pins along the way until the pieces crossed over one another above the forehead.” A second spritz of Dryspun Finish polished off the plait.
