Hailing from Tunisia, accessories designer Shourouk Rhaiem is known for her love of bold colors and sparkling statement jewelry. Her collections have caught the eye of international A-listers, including Sarah Jessica Parker; Jennifer Lopez; and the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. As she launched her debut jewel-encrusted, limited edition makeup collection at Sephora outlets across the region, we talked with the designer-turned-beauty maven about her beauty loves.

Elizabeth Whiston-Dew: How do you feel about lending your creativity to the world of beauty?

Shourouk Rhaiem: I’m addicted to makeup. It was always my dream to have my own collection and thanks to Sephora, I created a line that reflects the sparkling nature of stones.

What was on your mood board during your collaboration?

It was filled with images of Marisa Berenson; I was inspired by her makeup, the way she dresses, [and] the way she wore her purple or green turban with a matching bikini and makeup on holiday in Capri. I focused on technicolor pastels in contrast with electric colors and added a bit of glitter. It’s all about hippie-Capri!

Which three products are your favorites?

The jeweled blusher brush is made with natural hair and is super soft. This glamorous powder brush has a jewel that can be taken off and worn as a ring.

The gold nail varnish is like an explosion of gold sequins on your nails. It’s truly an exciting metallic.
The Jewel Pouch is so special to me; as a globetrotter, I need a big pochette to keep all my makeup. This jeweled clutch was inspired by my line of leather and python bags.

Which three skincare items are always in your bathroom cabinet?

The Natura Bissé Glycoline Glyco Extreme Peel makes my skin feel super smooth.
I’m just in love with the Aesop Geranium Leaf Body Cleanser. It reminds me of an afternoon spent at a Tunisian hammam.
I use the Santa Maria Novella Acqua di Rose Face Toner day and night. It removes any last traces of
makeup and I love the rose scent.

Which five beauty items can’t you live without?

The YSL Touche Éclat to conceal and illuminate my eyes, the Orofluido Beauty Elixir to give my hair a serious shot of shine. The Annick Goutal Néroli Cologne always takes me to the Mediterranean in a spritz. The Dior Rouge Dior in 844 Trafalgar will always be my signature lipstick. Lastly, the Guerlain Meteorites Light Revealing Pearls of Powder ensures that my complexion stays luminous.

Can you share your best beauty secret?

My mantra is that to wear makeup well, you need to start with a clean canvas. I learned this lesson from a young age when I used to spend time in the hammam in Tunisia with my mother. Nothing beats the feeling of clean skin.
