LFW Backstage Beauty: Sophia Webster

Kaleidoscopic Glitter Unicorns at Sophia Webster

Stepping into the glittery rainbow chaos that was backstage at Sophia Webster
felt like stepping into a cartoon dreamland. Models running around in polka dot
unitards and stiletto-heeled, open-toed, pastel ankle boots. Rainbow Bright-
inspired unicorn hair extensions thickly braided and wrapped around into cone
shapes on top of their heads, pinned into long hanging multi-colored plaits.

“The inspiration is My Little Pony, unicorns, and fun fairies,” makeup artist
Shinobu told us backstage. Skin was perfected and unified with MAC Mineralize
Moisture Foundation, but kept monotonous and almost flat with no contouring
or powders. Complexions were finished with a smattering of silver glitter blown
lightly on to each model’s face, concentrating on the prominent areas: the
forehead, cheekbones, and bridge of the nose. Eyebrows were natural but
groomed and lashes were kept free of mascara, emphasizing a nymph-like
innocence. “All the lips will be a different shade for each girl so when they appear
on stage they’ll have a rainbow effect.” The colors were created using the MAC
Paint Sticks mixed with lip mixing medium for a matte effect.

Nails were a veritable art bonanza with a variation of three kitsch designs
inspired by the prints used on the bags and shoes from the collection. “We’ve got
a bright knitted pattern, pastel roses, and ombré dots to hearts in pastel shades,”
explained Nail Rock’s Florence Orten. Each design was turned into nail wraps
and applied to models’ nails with the addition of 3D frou frou accouterments of
baby unicorns, sparkly metallic pink hearts, stars, and roses to complete the
mystical and playful theme.
