New York Fashion Week Fall 2017 is underway, kicking off the month-long catwalk parade across the four fashion capitals. On the first day, Bahrain-based label Noon By Noor revealed their latest collection, which combined masculine and feminine shapes. Elsewhere, Jason Wu celebrated a milestone and Raf Simons debuted his first runway show for Calvin Klein. Vogue Arabia takes note of key highlights from the first leg of NYFW.

Alexander Wang Fall 2017

Alexander Wang staged his Fall 2017 show at the historic RKO Hamilton Theater. Complete with a degenerating neo-renaissance interior, the grandiose backdrop played host to a front row of A-listers. Sofia Richie, A$AP Rocky, Anwar Hadid, and Caroline de Maigret took in the show that opened with a bevy of all-black looks, complete with button-fly skinny pants, ruffled miniskirts, and masculine outerwear designs. A number of tailored plaid pieces broke up the predominantly black lineup. On the catwalk, Kendall Jenner (and her new bob hairstyle) took to the runway in a shirt-jacket hybrid with form-fitting leather pants, while Bella Hadid took a turn in leather shorts and a relaxed, long-sleeve graphic top.

Jason Wu Fall 2017

Celebrating a 10-year milestone since launching his eponymous label, Jason Wu unveiled a collection traced with printed floral frocks, boxy tops, and cold-shoulder dresses to mark a decade in the business. For Fall 2017, daywear pieces were offered in the form of sweatshirts with cutout details that were paired with cigarette pants and flirty skirts. A number of tailored suits in textured fabrics and heritage prints were showcased alongside a parade of bias-cut cocktail dresses. Washed in velvet and satin, the fanciful frocks hark back to the designer’s earlier collections, which had a strong focus on the eveningwear silhouette. Key takeaways from the collection are a red, cinched-waist coat and a plush saffron dress that Wu unveiled to a front row of supportive ladies, including Adriana Lima, Diane Kruger, and Emily Ratajkowski.

Calvin Klein Fall 2017

One of the most anticipated shows of the season was Raf Simons’ inaugural Calvin Klein Fall 2017 collection as chief creative officer for the brand. The Belgian designer debuted a colorful lineup of mens- and womenswear designs to a star-studded front row, which included Brooke Shields, Julianne Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Diane von Furstenberg, and Millie Bobby Brown––the Stranger Things star fronted the campaign of the brand’s new made-to-measure line. Bright color blocking, Western-inspired shirts, classic checked suits, and plume-detailed dresses were presented alongside slick fur and plaid coats, encapsulated in plastic. A series of coordinating indigo denim looks ploughed through Simons’ Calvin Klein story.

Christian Siriano Fall 2017

Christian Siriano unveiled its Fall 2017 collection at the Plaza Hotel during NYFW. The predominantly terracotta palette was inspired by the grooved lines of beehive sandstone formations in Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park. Alek Wek kicked off the show in a belted coat with fur detail, followed by sophisticated tailored blazers, pants, and outerwear designs. Poetic sleeves, fringed details, and sequin embellishments traced metallic gowns and jumpsuits, which can all find a sweet spot in the Middle Eastern woman’s wardrobe this winter. A champion for celebrating all body types, Siriano showcased his latest collection through a diverse lineup of models, closing the show with a black “People Are People” statement T-shirt.

Noon By Noor Fall 2017

Following an indicative sketch, Bahraini designers and cousins Sheikha Noor and Sheikha Haya Al Khalifa debuted their Noon by Noor Fall 2017 collection on the first day of New York Fashion Week. Alexa Chung, actress Olivia Culpo, and DJ Leigh Lezark all sat in the front row, taking in the collection that drew on a juxtaposition of oversized masculine proportions and feminine shapes. Soft floral patterns, sandy tones, plush velvet, and shaggy textures traced the contemporary lineup of tapered pants, cocoon coats, soft sweaters, and flowing skirts. A black, strapless evening gown gathered at the side, embellished sheer silhouettes, and a slinky velvet dress are among the strong takeaways from the collection.
