Designers did not hold back on the shiny stuff for spring. Sequins were all the rage in the Spring 2017 collections, with brands like Rodarte, Gucci, and Alexander McQueen making a maximalist case for glitz. Pushing normcore aside, think Dynasty-inspired dresses and disco-era separates that will put a spark in your wardrobe.
The runway hit made a major impression on buyers in the front row. Al Othman’s senior buyer, Sara Bou Hamra, shares her take on the trend with Vogue Arabia by noting, “Designers showed that gold in both big and small doses transcends season and the time of day. We’ve seen the sequined oversized blazer from Monse, which can be easily dressed down, or paired with fancy pants and heels for formal outings.” Indeed, modern sequins are no longer reserved for your next party. Current cuts such as sweatshirts and athleisure jackets prove that the glistening add-ons are a round-the-clock staple.
Pailletted patterns and gilded fabrics in the form of mini frocks and midi shifts are closet ammo for after dark. “Elie Saab sent his models down the runway in metallic tiered gowns and polished sequined evening wear. The trend was also evident at Monique Lhuillier, with almost every gown beautifully embellished with either over-the-top sequined details or subtle sequined designs,” says Bou Hamra.
From glitter bomb bombers that will get you on the fast-track to sparkling during the day, to shimmery cocktail dresses fit for a summer soiree, there’s no time like the present to embrace the sequin trend.
