The Best Dressed Celebrities at the 2017 Oscar Awards

The 89th annual Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles last night, bringing out a bevy of silver screen stars to celebrate the biggest night in Hollywood. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, Casey Affleck took home the golden statue for Best Actor for his role in Manchester by the Sea, while Emma Stone won Best Actress for her performance in La La Land. Moonlight scooped up the top honor of the evening, Best Picture, following an unprecedented mix-up where La La Land was initially announced as the winner. Nevertheless, the latter won six Oscars that evening, including Best Director and Best Song.

On the red carpet, neutral shades splashed with high-octane metallics were the biggest trend of the evening. Reminiscent of the golden trophy, Emma Stone sparkled in a gilded embellished Givenchy Haute Couture number, Jessica Biel shimmered in Kaufmanfranco, and Halle Berry stunned in a glistening, one-shoulder custom Atelier Versace dress that featured a fringed hemline.

The focus on the lower edge of gowns was also highlighted by the dramatic feathering on Sofia Boutella’s sequined Chanel Haute Couture design. Conservative cuts worn by Dakota Johnson and Ruth Negga, by way of high necklines and long sleeves, evoked demure elegance.

Brie Larson, Alicia Vikander, Kirsten Dunst, and Taraji P. Henson stepped out in a glamorous take on the classic black dress. Meanwhile, Karlie Kloss made a sleek impression in an optic white Stella McCartney creation, and Michelle Williams opted for a two-tone black and ecru gown by Louis Vuitton.

As for the dapper men of the evening, Ryan Gosling stepped out in a sharp Gucci suit, and Mahershala Ali––who made history as the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar––celebrated his monumental moment in an Ermenegildo Zegna tux. Pharrell Williams stole the spotlight, however, wearing a Chanel suit pulled from the label’s Spring 2009 collection.
