While the reign of the bold, big brow has been in place for several seasons, the look has softened for 2017. “[The] boy brow and just a little bit of cheek [plus] lip balm, so they get that really strong androgynous feel” was the word from makeup artist Diane Kendal backstage at the Sacai Spring 2017 show, so coining the new breakout beauty trend of the moment. Vogue Arabia decodes the look, and uncovers which makeup combinations emphasize the trend.

The natural, untamed brow made its recent comeback on the runways at Christian Dior Couture 2016 where models featured brushed out brows flicked upwards for a relaxed, natural effect. Teamed with bold matte red lipstick, the look was glamorous but slightly undone. Following the cue, Isabel Marant’s beauty approach drew emphasis to the “boy brow” with super dewy skin, a flush of peachy blush, lip balm, and barely-there eye makeup.

Vogue cover girls Gigi Hadid and Taylor Hill are your go-to examples for how to put the look into practice, featuring groomed but not overly done brows. In off-duty mode, these models gravitate towards a “no-makeup makeup” look which sits with Kendal’s “boy brow” approach. At the other end of the spectrum, Rochas and Opening Ceremony opted for one thick line pencilled over the natural brows to contrast. Makeup artist Mark Carrasquillo commented that there were “a lot of brows this season, a straight pencilled brow; in New York I was doing a lot of ‘90s brows, supermodel brows.” Choices are in abundance as to which way you tame (or strategically don’t tame) your brows as the new season unfolds.

In its most exaggerated manifestation, the models at Undercover Spring 2017 featured statement brows that were brushed upwards and fixed into place with a slick of clear mascara. A look that doesn’t transition as readily to real life, but the take-home is clear: If you want to tap the beauty movement du jour, grow out your eyebrows to their natural fullness for a fresh-faced look.
