Met Gala Best and Boldest Beauty Looks In Recent Years

Every first Monday in May since 1971, our favorite A-listers descend upon the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York to celebrate the Costume Institute’s current running exhibition, showcasing mesmerizing gowns and equally memorable beauty looks. (The theme of this year’s exhibition is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”).

Considering last year’s theme was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons, it’s no surprise that the bob was a red carpet hit among A-listers, which included Lily Collins and Selena Gomez.

2016’s Manus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology exhibition, saw Kim Kardashian West step out with her reflective, sleek lengths raked back, drawing further attention to her barely there brows. Also at the event, Taylor Swift anchored her choppy, bleached bob with a slick of oxblood lips. At the 2015 event, Rihanna’s gilded headdress and bold arches soaked up the spotlight, while a fashionably late Beyoncé made a head-turning entrance with a high, off-kilter ponytail.

Lupita Nyong’o reinforced 2014’s Charles James: Beyond Fashion theme with a structural hairstyle heightened with a bold headpiece. Meanwhile, a radiant Suki Waterhouse proved that sometimes, a swivel of red lipstick is all that’s needed to make a lasting impact.

Ahead of this year’s Met Gala (it’s in a week), we look back at the boldest beauty looks from past events.
