Hauntingly Beautiful Hair at Alexander McQueen

For her Fall 2017 Ready-to-Wear offering, Alexander McQueen’s creative director Sarah Burton drew from the magical, ancient traditions of the southernmost county of the United Kingdom, Cornwall, home of King Arthur and the “Cloutie” Tree. It was the latter that inspired the current collection. Also referred to as a wishing tree, it is said that people would tie strips of rags and ribbons on a branch and make a wish. The notion of the ancient healing tradition was brought to life backstage, where hair pro Guido Palau crafted undone tendrils, complete with extensions.

Paired with beaded dresses replete with Medieval-inspired motifs, the wispy tendrils––some of which were brought forward and secured in the front––invoked Guinevere. To translate the concept onto the face, cheeks were hollowed out by way of russet powder, while a swirl of rose-colored blush added a healthy flush to the skin. Makeup artists enveloped the eyes in soft burgundy tones, lending a hint of color to models’ pale complexions.
