The Golden Globes saw its fair share of swoon-worthy gowns and plunging necklines, but what really caught our attention (aside from the epic ponytails belonging to Lorde and Katie Holmes) was the number of bobs on the red carpet. Emma Stone switched things up with undone waves, while Rosamund Pike opted for a sleek asymmetrical look. It was Kate Mara, however, who stole the short-hair show. Hairstylist Mara Roszak added a simple twist near the nape of the actress’s neck—instantly upping the glam factor. With everyone from Kate Bosworth to catwalker Nadja Bender shedding a few inches in 2015, we have a feeling this how-to for chin-length strands will come in handy whether you’re hitting up a black-tie gala or a dive bar.
Step 1: Roszak prepped damp hair with L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Blow Dry It Quick Dry Primer Spray to speed up the drying time and give strands grip.

Step 3: The majority of Mara’s locks were pulled into a low pony and secured with an elastic, before sections of hair were wrapped around and secured with bobby pins.
Step 4: To finish, the short layers were hit again with the flatiron. Roszak roughed up the ponytail by misting her fingertips with hairspray and piecing out the ends.
