Starch Foundation

The Starch Foundation’s show is an important one. Founded by Rabih Kayrouz and Tala Hajjar, the program handpicks regional designers, mentors them, and offers a platform for them to show and grow. To wit: Timi Hayek, who featured two covetable collections during Season 3 and Season 4 at Fashion Forward (under the Starch Foundation umbrella), has since opened her first namesake boutique in Beirut.

Sarkis Dersahagian
While the opening women’s looks in neon greens and teals came across as awkward and forgettable, the menswear looks were head turners, and it wasn’t just because the jackets were flapping wide open. From tailored print shorts, to vests, smock shirts, and jackets that were both structured and airy, the whole vibe came off as individualist and desirable. In this critic’s view, Dersahagian demonstrates strong potential with menswear—a burgeoning industry in its own right—and shouldn’t spread himself too thin.

Nour Najem
This designer’s geometric references and sandy palette evoke luxury and intellect. While the “prayer beads” affixed in all manners to her Bethlehem-esque collection swayed with spirituality (a theme extended by the soundtrack), the intricate patterns were a nod to the geometric designs of modern Middle Eastern architecture. Meanwhile, that tie-dye skirt made for a welcome nod to more cultural creeds.

La Terre Est Folle
Lebanese designer Joe Arida showcased an all-white debut collection that was both elegant and urban. Carrying out the appropriate strategy of presenting a memorable signature with his introductory show, Arida featured streetwear separates layered with a veil of sheer netting. It’s no surprise that this designer has a past in advertising—clearly, he has a sense of what sells today.
