Wadha Spring 2016: A Beautiful Blend of Contemporary Art and Qatar’s Skyline

As part of Al Othman boutique’s new in-store pop-up concept, which showcases collections by regional designers, Wadha Al Hajri—behind her eponymous label Wadha—is set to display her Spring 2016 collection at Kuwait’s luxury multi-brand retailer from May 10th until the end of the month.

Ahead of the anticipated month-long trunk show, Style.com/Arabia brings you a first look at the Wadha Spring 2016 collection. The Burj Qatar and an art installation titled Coronation Park—a structure consisting of nine white fiberglass sculptures that Al Hajri came across during her visit to the 56th Venice Biennale—served as a starting point for her latest offering.

“I wanted to create a story where each piece could be treated as a powerful statement on its own, while imparting that same sense of power to the woman wearing the clothes,” Al Hajri explained. In a black and white palette, the collection features the designer’s signature geometric, arabesque patterns that stem from her Qatari heritage and fondness for architecture. The offering itself showcases sharply-tailored silhouettes and separates that are notable for her play on voluminous proportions and clean lines.

Style.com/Arabia’s Managing Editor Caterina Minthe commented, “Without a doubt, Wadha Al Hajri is one of the Middle East’s brightest talents; her clothes materialize a meditation on volume and space so strong, it almost acts as shield to all the ‘fashion noise’ that surrounds us today.” Highlights include a neoprene, balloon-sleeved, embossed patterned shift; an embroidered, midi dress overlaid with a structured, cropped, draped sash; and a tea-length dress featuring a pleated, trapeze capelet. Meanwhile, the designer experiments with exaggerated textures by way of shaved raffia as seen detailed across a pleated dress.

Al Hajri launched her ready-to-wear label in 2010, and since establishing her brand the designer has garnered international acclaim via a showcase at Jeff and Justine Koons’ gallery in New York City and the Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Arts in Doha. Al Hajri was also selected as one of the eight emerging talents to showcase on the catwalk during the inaugural Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience platform. In 2015, the designer immersed herself in a three-month internship at Valentino in Rome to sharpen her design skills.

The Wadha Spring 2016 collection trunk show pop-up will start on May 10th at Al Othman boutique in the Mariam complex, Kuwait.
