Doing Right

Fashion Week starts with a feel-good moment at amfAR’s annual gala.

AIDS survivors, their supporters, and everyone hoping for a cure raised a glass at the amfAR gala at Cipriani Wall Street last night. Many guests were fashion veterans who have seen how AIDS has affected the industry. “There are some names that I keep in my phone book because I refuse to eliminate them. Legions of talented, fabulous people were lost,” said Fern Mallis, explaining that in the early days it was hard to get anyone to show up to an AIDS fundraiser. Not now. Chloë Sevigny, Ashley Greene, John Legend, Heidi Klum, and enough models to fill a runway were in the crowd. “I’ve lost a lot of friends over the years, but at the same time, the work amfAR has done has saved a lot of lives of people I know,” said Michael Kors.

A limited-edition Kenneth Cole bag and lunch with Sarah Jessica Parker raised $80,000 dollars in the auction, and performances from Santigold and Cee Lo Green had guests dancing between dinner tables. But the highlight of the evening had to be when amfAR chairman Kenneth Cole was honored for his years of AIDS advocacy. Cole’s brother-in-law Governor Andrew Cuomo did the introduction: “This is a great man, a man who does the things he does for all of the right reasons.”
