Clip-In Hair Extensions: the Long and Short of It

Backstage at the fashion shows, clip-in extensions transform the models’ hair from short and fine to long and lustrous in a flash. Whether left loose in waves or tied into long, swishy ponytails, the result is very natural to the naked eye. You might be surprised to know just how many people tote these tress-enhancing secrets (some of whom won’t ever admit it), and with the use of real hair, the result is completely undetectable—unless, of course, someone is massaging your scalp.

The great thing about clip-in, clip-out hair extensions (unlike permanent glue-bonded ones) is that you can change up your look in a matter of seconds without damaging your own tresses. Whether you can’t wait for your haircut to grow out or you simply fancy trying some new styles, this is the safest way to experiment.

My Tried-and-Tested Review:

Intrigued to join the long locks crew and add some versatility to my hair repertoire, I did some research and found out that the Tony & Lee Salon tucked away in the Byblos Hotel in Tecom in Dubai was a salon that was known for this particular service. Upon my consultation, I met brothers Hashem and Zaid Rafaya’a who told me that hair extensions were extremely popular among their clientele. Hashem, the owner of the salon, then assessed my hair color, type, and length and chose fine European hair that would fall naturally against my own. After dying my locks a natural blond shade, Hashem set to work to dye the set of dark hairpieces in the exact shade of my fresh new color.

Please take note that this is the crucial point: if you opt for extensions that are too light or too dark, it can make your hair look very faux and not fabulous. So rather than buying online, get a bespoke set made just for you. After a couple of tweaks to the color, Hashem parted my hair and gently backcombed a section right at the root, then clipped in the first set. He then parted my hair again just below the crown and did the same thing. The backcombing anchors the clips in place so that the hair doesn’t fall out—like it did once with Kate Moss on the red carpet. Yes, the beauty suffered a rare hair mishap.

With the hair in place and falling down to my lower back, it was time to go for the chop. Another important matter when it comes to the faux debate is to resist the temptation to go too long. Be realistic and choose a length that flatters your face shape and one that you can manage without a team of hair gurus on hand.
