Hair color techniques like ombré (dip-dyed lengths) and balayage (hand-painted highlights) have been the beauty buzzwords in salons for a while. Now, it’s time for them to move aside and allow for babylights to come through. Just last week, I was recently on the beach discussing with our Senior Editor that the best hair color you can aim for is the one you sported when you were a child following the summer holidays when it had been gently lightened from the sun. Taking a browse through hair guru Harry Josh’s Instagram account confirms that this is indeed a pending trend championed by some of the world’s most beautiful women.

What are Babylights?

Babylights are the most subtle baby blond highlights that alter your own hair color so that it gleams in the sunlight.

The highlights are artfully applied around to the hairline, around natural parting, and to the ends of the hair.

This is a technique not just for blonds—even medium brown to rich chestnut hair can benefit from the trend due to its subtle nature.

The highlights are so finely woven in that there is very minimal regrowth. You won’t have to worry about Shakira-style roots growing in (that you get from applying a block color.)
Your hair will instantly look glossier as the lit-lengths reflect the light.

Who is Rocking the Trend?

A poster girl for this trend, Gisele Bündchen, has been sporting babylights for years and it works beautifully with her relaxed bohemian style waves.
